A Walk Through the Garden

Join us for a walk through the garden. Along the way, we will pass 4,000 individual rose bushes, including Grandiflora, Shrub, Floribunda and hybrid tea roses in a myriad of hues. There are between 300 and 400 different varieties of roses in the garden.

We will see roses that are participating  in  the AARS program. The All-America Rose Selection  (or AARS) is a nonprofit association dedicated to the  introduction of
exceptional roses. Since 1938, they have encouraged the rose
industry to improve the vitality, disease  resistance and
beauty of roses for American home gardens. Each  rose
must  complete a two year trial where it is judged on 15
characteristics. Up to  4 new test  roses find a home in
Central Park Rose Garden each year. The Rose Garden
is  one of eight AARS-accredited public rose gardens  in New York
State. You can find out more about the AARS at www.rose.org.
As you continue  your walk, look for the 6 foot tall abstract sculpture
composed  of Cor ten steel. This sculpture, created by Robert Blood,
was  installed in the 1980's and is entitled "Variation on The Chinese
Calligraph Yuan." The pond in the northwest  corner of the garden has
been newly rebuilt and  improved. This and many other new
features will be coming to the Garden in the future.
